  • Per reports, in a 2018 hearings, Spors wrote to the court, ” My mom says I killed him, but I don’t remember doing it”

Content warning: The following article contains disturbing details.

A Wisconsin woman is accused of bludgeoning her mother to death in a gruesome incident.

Carrie Zettel, 64, was killed in the backyard of her Milwaukee home in an alleged attack that left her “brain matter visible” earlier this month, a search warrant said, CBS 58 and Local 12 reported.

The warrant cited by Local 12 was obtained by WTMJ.

Lauren Spors, identified by several local outlets as Zettel’s 29-year-old daughter, was arrested in connection with the Oct. 12 incident and charged with first-degree intentional homicide, according to online court records reviewed by PEOPLE.

Zettel’s close friend and neighbor Loretta Moyer says there has been a history of alleged violence by Spors in the family, CBS 58 reported.

Online court records reviewed by PEOPLE show a domestic abuse restraining order had been filed — and granted — in a “family case” against Spors in February 2018.

Moyer told CBS 58 that Zettel had long suspected Spors allegedly played a role in the 2018 death of her father, Jeffrey Spors.

In a petition for restraining order obtained by the outlet, Zettel alleged Lauren “struck her father repeatedly on [his] head with heavy decorative bottles.” Lauren also allegedly “threatened life with a knife” following the attack.

According to CBS58, in 2018 hearings, Spors wrote to the court, “I haven’t accepted my dad’s death. My mom says I killed him, but I don’t remember doing it.”

Officials eventually ruled Jeffrey’s death accidental because he reportedly had a history of overmedicating, per the medical examiner’s report cited by CBS 58.

Lauren was also charged with misdemeanor battery and theft in June 2020, per online court records reviewed by PEOPLE; that case was discharged after she was found incompetent to stand trial.

Zettel is being remembered for her bright personality and advocacy for those with mental illness, her son said at a recent vigil for her, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

She was fondly known among children as “Grandma Carrie,” and was famous for her signature cheesecake-like dish, friends said at the vigil.

“She was always there for the children,” said Jordan Wake.

Lauren’s first-degree intentional homicide charge in connection with Zettel’s death also includes a modifier of domestic violence – threat, according to online court records, which do not indicate a plea.

A lawyer listed for her in the records did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
