Petite and energetic, widow and philanthropist Irene Silverman was 82 when she mysteriously vanished from her multi-million-dollar townhouse on Manhattan’s Upper East Side in the summer of 1998.
Her disappearance happened to coincide the sudden departure of a 23-year-old man and a woman in her 60s who had moved just a few weeks earlier into one of the elegantly furnished apartments that Silverman rented out in her building for up to $10,000 a month.
But there was no coincidence. It was soon discovered that Silverman’s former tenants Kenny Kimes and his mother Sante, a pair of grifters wanted for a cross-country series of crimes, including the shooting death of a Los Angeles businessman named David Kazdin whose body was discovered in a Dumpster near LAX in March of 1998, according to CNN, as well as thefts and arson in Las Vegas and the Bahamas.
The story of the notorious Kimes’s criminal career, culminating in the murder of Irene Silverman, as well as the manhunt that led to their arrest and 2000 conviction, is featured on Dateline’s “The Devil Wore White,” airing on Friday, Jan. 31 at 9 p.m./8 p.m. CT.
The episode features an interview with the now 49-year-old Kenny Kimes, who is serving his sentence for killing Kazdin in a prison in San Diego.
“I absolutely regret my past and the ignorance of my past crimes makes we want to do better and engage in what I would call tangible contrition,” he told correspondent Keith Morrison in the prison interview.
Asked what he would say the families of his victims, Kenny responded: “100 percent. I am sorry. I was an idiot and my ignorance I am ashamed of.”
