A North Carolina woman is facing criminal charges after allegedly firing shots into the air at a crowded back-to-school function to break up a fight, sending panicked students and parents running for their lives, according to authorities.
Cherez Davis, 34, of Charlotte, was arrested on Saturday, Aug. 9, and charged with carrying a concealed weapon and going armed to the terror of people, according to an affidavit obtained by PEOPLE.
She was released on a $50,000 bond, according to online jail records.
The incident took place at the 11th annual Back-to-School Health Fair at the C.W. Williams Community Health Center in Charlotte, which offers $25 physicals for students, immunizations and free book bags and school supplies.
Davis told police that during the fair, her son and another boy began arguing, according to the affidavit.
When another adult “got involved,” seemingly escalating the situation, she said she reached into her backpack, pulled out a Taurus G6 handgun and “fired two shots into the air to try to break up the fight,” the affidavit alleges.
Chaos ensued when the gunshots rang out, sending more than 100 terrified children and adults to flee, according to the affidavit.
Meanwhile, Davis “put her firearm back into the backpack and started walking away,” the affidavit alleges.
Davis was arrested soon after police arrived to search for someone matching her description.
