  • A 31-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, believed to be her parents, have been charged with murder, according to the BBC

A 1-year-old girl was brought to a U.K. hospital with what police described as “grievous” injuries and later died — and now her parents have been charged with murder.

Emergency services were called at 11:34 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, to a home in Newport, Isle of Wight, following reports that a child had been taken to the hospital in critical condition, Hampshire Police said in a news release.

The toddler, identified as Jayla-Jean Mclaren, died two days later on Sunday, Aug. 3, police said.

Her grieving family released a short tribute through police: “Mummy, daddy, and nanny will always love you. Fly high princess.”

Per the BBC, a 31-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, both from Newport and believed to be Jayla-Jean’s parents, were initially arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. They were released on conditional bail but have since been re-arrested and charged with murder. Both remain in custody as the investigation continues.

Detective Superintendent Rod Kenny said the incident has caused “considerable distress” in the community.

“Our thoughts remain with all who knew and loved Jayla-Jean,” he said in the police release. “The arrests made today are just one part of a much wider set of enquiries in our investigation to establish exactly what happened to Jayla-Jean, and those enquiries remain ongoing.”

“We would like to reiterate that you should not speculate on this case, particularly on social media, as this could affect our investigation,” he said.

According to the BBC, police have asked anyone with information to call 101 or submit tips online, quoting reference 44250344990.
