A Las Vegas man was identified as the gunman who shot at least five people, killing four and leaving another person critically injured, at 345 Park Ave. in New York City on Monday, July 28. One of the deceased victims was an off-duty police officer.
During a press conference at Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan, the NYPD identified the shooter as Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas. He was 27. The NYPD said the shooter had a “documented mental health history.”
N.Y.C. Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch confirmed that surveillance footage showed Tamura exit a double-parked black BMW on Park Avenue between 51st and 52nd Streets, carrying an M4 rifle in his right hand.
He then walked toward the building’s entrance, alone. The building security camera footage shows the shooter enter the lobby, turn right, and immediately open fire on an NYPD officer. He then shot a woman who took cover behind a pillar and proceeded through the lobby while spraying it with gunfire.

Tamura then made his way to the elevator bank, where he shot a security guard who was taking cover behind the security desk. One additional man was shot in the lobby, per his own statement from the hospital. The shooter then entered the elevator, which opened in the lobby. A woman exited that elevator, and he allowed her to walk past him unharmed.
He went up to the 33rd floor, which houses Rudin Management, and began to walk the floor, firing rounds as he traveled. One person was struck and killed on that floor. He then walked down a hallway and shot himself in the chest, Tisch said.
“We believe this to be a lone shooter and there is no active threat to the public,” says Tisch.
The building in which the shooting occurred houses Blackstone Inc., the NFL’s headquarters, financial and legal advisory firm KPMG, and several top law firms, including Loeb & Loeb LLP. Commercial giant Rudin Management owns the high-rise structure. It’s not clear which organization, if any, the shooter was targeting. A motive remains unknown at this time.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams identified the deceased off-duty police officer as Didarul Islam. Islam was a father of two whose wife is pregnant with their third child.
“Our hearts are heavy. Five innocent people were shot tonight,” Adams said. “We lost four souls to another senseless act of gun violence, including a member of the New York City Police Department, Officer Islam.”
Islam served in the 47th precinct and was 36, Adams said. He was a 3-and-a-half-year veteran of the department.
The mayor continued, “He protected New Yorkers. He’s an immigrant from Bangladesh. And he loved this city. And everyone we spoke with stated, he was in person of faith, and a person that believed in God and believed and living out the life of a godly person. He embodies what this city is all about. He’s a true-blue New Yorker.”
“He was doing the job that we asked him to do,” Commissioner Tisch said of Islam. “He died a hero.”
The other victims were not identified pending family notification. One victim remains in critical condition.
Four other people are being treated for “minor injuries they sustained while trying to flee the scene,” police said.
