- Police said Mitchell Eddins first came across the burned body of 14-year-old Danika Troy, who police said was killed by two classmates
- Eddins allegedly took a scooter found at the scene before contacting police, according to an arrest report
- He is now charged with petty theft and failure to report a death
A man who stumbled upon the body of a 14-year-old girl who authorities said had been lured into the woods and murdered didn’t immediately report what he found — instead, he allegedly stole her scooter.
The body of Danika Troy was discovered in the woods near her home in Pace, Fla., on Dec. 4, PEOPLE previously reported. Police claimed two teenage boys — one of whom she reportedly had a crush on — lured her into the woods and shot her before allegedly burning her body.
According to an arrest report obtained by PEOPLE, Danika’s body was found by Mitchell Eddins, who told police he had stopped to “reli[e]ve himself” when he saw the burned area of woods.
Eddins first saw a black scooter and went to retrieve it, which is when he then saw the burned body, the arrest report states. He then allegedly took the scooter back to his residence and said he told neighbors about the body, who advised him to call law enforcement — which he never did.
Police said Eddins was asked why he didn’t call police, and he allegedly said he had planned to, per the report.
The scooter was subsequently seized by officers.
Eddins was arrested and charged with petty theft and failure to report a death, per the report.
According to a separate arrest report cited by WEAR, the Pensacola News-Journal and WALA, the two suspects arrested on suspicion of Danika’s murder have been identified as 16-year-old Gabriel Williams and 14-year-old Kimahri Blevins. Neither teen has yet been charged as an adult in connection with the crime, though they ultimately could be, per the outlets.
WALA reported, citing the arrest report, that Williams and Blevins planned the murder. Blevins allegedly told investigators they had planned to shoot Danika once, but Williams kept firing. The two teens then burned her body and left the area, according to the report, per the outlet.
Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson told the Pensacola News-Journal he is working closely with the Office of the State Attorney to get both Williams and Blevins tried as adults.
“If you commit an adult crime, you deserve to serve adult time,” he said, per the outlet.

Danika’s mother, Ashley Troy, previously spoke to PEOPLE about her daughter’s death.
“She thought she was sneaking out to spend time with the boy she loved,” apparently referring to one of the suspects. “She was currently grounded for doing the same thing. Kids just don’t think about consequences. She trusted him. It wasn’t hard to lure her. He had her heart. She would do anything for him.”
A GoFundMe created to raise money for Danika’s mother to help defray funeral costs has raised over $27,000 as of Wednesday, Dec. 10.
