A man has been fatally shot after entering a family member’s booby-trapped home in South Carolina, according to police.
Jordan Dove, 34, of Lugoff, was found with gunshot wounds when police responded to reports of a shooting at a residence on Chickadee Circle in Saint Matthews on the evening of Monday, Feb. 24, Sheriff Thomas Summers said in a news release shared on Facebook on behalf of the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.
Dove was taken to the hospital by the Calhoun County Emergency Medical Service but “ultimately succumbed to his injury,” per the release. According to Summers, Dove was checking on a vacant residence that belonged to a family member when he was wounded.
“Upon getting on scene, it was determined very quickly that the discharge of the firearm came from inside the residence,” Summers said in the release.
Deputies then “slowly” entered the property as they believed it may have been booby-trapped.
A shotgun was found “rigged at the back door” to strike anyone attempting to gain entry, Summers said. Police were able to dismantle it from the trap before continuing to assess the scene.
The front door was barricaded shut with no other occupants inside, authorities reported.
“This was a very dangerous situation that appeared to be targeted towards law enforcement,” Summers added. “It is yet another example of the dangers faced by law enforcement every day.”
Authorities believe the incident was isolated and there is no threat to the public at this time, per the release.
Homeowner Alfonzo Brown, 66, is set to face charges, ABC News reported.
According to local media outlet News 19 WLTX, Brown was Dove’s uncle.
He wasn’t home at the time of the incident as he is currently facing charges for allegedly trying to kill a “different nephew and two other people.”
“We think he probably just booby-trapped the house, he knew he would be on the run,” Summers told News 19 WLTX. “He knew that he would be tracked back to Calhoun County and we’d go there with a search warrant.”
“I feel like the booby-trap was targeting us, targeting law enforcement,” he added.

Brown will be back in court for a preliminary hearing on March 7, according to WUSA 9.
