A double murder-suicide that claimed the lives of a “loving mother” and her “shining light” daughter has rocked the Portland, Ore., community.
Just after 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, Portland police responded to a call about gunfire at a home on Southeast 64th Ave.
Inside the home, they found the bodies of 48-year-old Maria Florencia Rubio and 10-year-old Liliana Morgan. Both of them had been shot and killed by Rubio’s son, 22-year-old Miguel Morgan, according to police.
Miguel then turned the gun on himself and died by suicide, police said.
Rubio “loved our family with all of her heart,” her surviving son, 20-year-old Mateo Christian, wrote in a GoFundMe he organized to help defray funeral costs and pay for bills, including the mortgage on the family’s home.
His younger sister, Liliana, “had so much more to see and grow. She loved cats and watching movies with her mom [and spending] personal time with all of our family,” he wrote.
Calling her a beautiful soul, he said she was close to her father “and was so loved by her classmates and everyone around her. She spent her last days excited about school, perfecting what outfit she was going to wear, adventures with her dad, drinking a matcha chiller, snuggling up with our mom and cat watching movies before bed.”
The grandparents of Rubio’s children are still in shock as to why Miguel would commit such an act.
“Absolutely surprised by how this happened,” their grandmother, Tonya Trutton, told KOIN. “You do feel like, ‘what did you miss? How did you not see this? What was he not sharing with us?’ And there’s just no answer.”
“It’s really hard to understand how this happened, how one beloved child gone is the cause or heart of the other child causing that loss,” Trutton added.
Tonya and her husband Daniel also started a GoFundMe to help their son and remaining grandchild pay for funeral expenses. “Any gifts of support are greatly appreciated,” the fundraiser read, with the couple adding that they are “heartbroken” over the tragedy.
Rubio is being remembered as “a loving mother who always put her children first.”
