Man Allegedly Killed Girlfriend After His 'Paranormal Meter' Scared Him into Thinking She Would Eat Him: Police

A Pennsylvania man will stand trial for murder and other charges after allegedly confessing to killing his girlfriend in January — claiming he did it out of fear of paranormal activity.

The victim, 46-year-old Jane A. White, was found fatally shot on a street in Northumberland County, Pa., on Jan. 3, The Daily Item, PennLive and The News-Item reported.

Her boyfriend, Jared Wolfe, 46, was arrested after his brother called 911 and alleged Wolfe had told him he’d shot White, per an arrest affidavit and the court testimony of a Sunbury police officer, both of which were reported on by multiple outlets.

At a hearing on Tuesday, Feb. 5, a judge said Wolfe will be standing trial for all seven charges against him, including first-degree murder, PennLive reported.

On the day of the incident, Wolfe allegedly told authorities he and White had gone to a friend’s house where they smoked marijuana, per the affidavit. However, police say he later claimed he was not sure what he had smoked. 

He then said he’d put a “paranormal meter” up against a statue, and claimed the “high reading” on the purported meter scared him, per the affidavit. Due to the purported high reading, he said he became scared someone would kill him, the affidavit alleges.

“Jared Wolfe stated he thought that Jane White (and the friends) were all trying to kill him and eat him, so he panicked and ran out of the house to retrieve his handgun from his vehicle,” Sunbury police officer Trey Kurtz wrote in the affidavit.

Wolfe confessed to subsequently shooting White, according to Kurtz.

White was pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner, who determined she died from a gunshot wound to the chest, per The News Item.

According to the National Gun Violence Memorial, White was an artist, photographer and caregiver who left behind two children. 

“She was an amazing mother and person. Her life was taken from her with no reason at all,” reads an anonymous note on her memorial page. 

“I think about you every day Mom. I love you so so much,” reads another comment.

Wolfe has been charged with first-degree murder, third-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault among other offenses, according to online court records reviewed by PEOPLE.

Plea information was not available in the court records. His defense attorney did not immediately respond to a request from PEOPLE for comment.
