A North Carolina man allegedly killed his girlfriend during an argument at her apartment, then called 911 and said, “There’s been a murder,” according to authorities.
On Wednesday, Feb. 19, Cary Police Department officers responded to an apartment located in the back of the CubeSmart storage facility in Cary where Rebecca Rene Carter, 41, the manager of the storage facility, lived.
Carter was found dead with a knife still in her chest, according to a search warrant obtained by PEOPLE.
The Cary Police Department had received a 911 call at 12:24 p.m. from a man who identified himself as Travis Huff, saying he killed his girlfriend at her apartment at the CubeSmart, per the warrant.
Huff, 40, said he and Carter had gotten into an argument the night before and then went to a bar and “had drinks,” the warrant says.
When they returned to the apartment, “there was pushing, arguing and shoving,” the warrant says, before Huff alleged he “lost control” and choked her.
“She’s no longer here,” he allegedly told the dispatcher. “I killed her.”
Police took Huff into custody at the CubeSmart. He allegedly told detectives that “he had killed Rebecca by strangling her with his hands and stabbed her at least twice in the chest after he believed she was deceased,” according to the warrant.
He said he covered her body with a comforter from the bed in the room in which she was killed.

He later returned with a friend, he said, using crack cocaine in the apartment with his girlfriend’s dead body in the bedroom, the warrant states.
Huff allegedly told detectives he texted Carter’s boss on Feb. 19 from her phone, saying she was sick, hoping to keep questions at bay when she didn’t arrive for her shift.
Huff is charged with murder in connection to Carter’s death. He is being held without bond at the Wake County Detention Center. If convicted, Huff could face the death penalty, ABC 11 reports.
As Huff awaits his next court date, Carter’s friends and family are reeling from her death.
Melvin Montgomery, a former colleague of Carter’s, said he is “very shocked, actually,” ABC 11 reports.
Carter’s colleagues said she had “a big heart and was very friendly,” per ABC 11.
It is unclear whether Huff has retained an attorney who can speak on his behalf.
This is an active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Cary Police Department at (919) 469-4012.
