Five people have been charged in Argentina in connection with Liam Payne’s Oct. 16 death at the CasaSur hotel in Buenos Aires, authorities announced.
According to a Monday, Dec. 30 press release from Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office, the hotel’s manager, “GAM,” its receptionist, “ERG,” and Payne’s friend “RLN” — whom the BBC reports are Gilda Martin, Esteban Grassi and Roger Nores — have been charged with manslaughter after the One Direction alum had a fatal fall from the third floor of a hotel balcony at the age of 31.
Per the prosecutor’s office, “EDP,” a hotel employee, and “BNP,” a waiter — whom the BBC reports are Ezequiel Pereyra and Braian Paiz — have been charged with supplying drugs.
According to the prosecutor’s office statement, “EDP” is suspected of selling Payne cocaine on Oct. 15 and Oct. 16, while “BNP” is suspected of selling cocaine to him twice on Oct. 14.
The statement says “RLN” has been charged with manslaughter after allegedly “failing to fulfill his duties of care, assistance and help” towards Payne after he “abandoned him” knowing he suffered from “multiple addictions.” “GAM” is being charged with manslaughter for allegedly failing to prevent Payne from being taken to his hotel room just before his death.
“ERG” has been charged with manslaughter for allegedly asking three people to “drag” Payne, who could not stand on his own, to his room, instead of keeping him safe, per the statement.
According to the statement, Judge Laura Bruniard has moved forward with the prosecutions, which the defendants’ lawyers can appeal. However, if their appeals aren’t granted, a trial will begin.
RLN, GAM and ERG are facing 1-5 years in prison while EDP and BNP are facing 4-15 years, the release reveals.
Reps for Argentina’s prosecutor’s office have not yet responded to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.
In a Nov. 7 press release from Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office, it was revealed that three suspects had been arrested and charged with abandonment of a person followed by death as well as supply and facilitation of narcotics. At the time the suspects had not been named by authorities.
Per the release, “Payne was not fully conscious or was experiencing a state of noticeable decrease or loss of consciousness at the time of the fall.”
After the pop musician fell from the balcony and died, “illicit conduct was discovered from which three people were charged with the crimes,” the release said.
One of the suspects was “the person who accompanied the artist on a daily basis during his stay in the city of Buenos Aires.” A second suspect was a hotel employee accused of supplying Payne with cocaine, and a third was an alleged “drug supplier.”

Per the release, prosecutors tried to “reconstruct the days in which Payne was staying at the CasaSur hotel on Costa Rica Street” in Buenos Aires between Oct. 13 and 16.
They also said in the release that “self-harm of any kind and/or physical intervention by third parties were ruled out” as contributing factors in his death.
In the moments before his death and in the period of at least his last 72 hours, Payne had traces of “polydrug use of alcohol, cocaine and a prescription antidepressant in his body,” the release from authorities in Argentina stated.
