On the evening of July 23, Elizabeth Lawlor agreed to meet her ex-boyfriend Sean Knight Nicholson — the eldest grandson of Hollywood icon Jack Nicholson — for what was supposed to be a quiet conversation between former partners. But by the end of the night, Lawlor was unconscious and missing part of a front tooth.
According to sources and a police report obtained by PEOPLE, Lawlor told police that Nicholson, 29, had reached out to Lawlor, 28, following an alleged stint in rehab, claiming he wanted to reconnect as friends and talk through what he described as a difficult period in his life. Nicholson, a recovering addict allegedly diagnosed with schizophrenia, has a history of mixing prescription medication with illicit substances, per the police report’s summary of Lawlor’s statements.
The reunion marked the latest chapter in a turbulent relationship that began in April 2023 — one marked by repeated breakups and reconciliations, and marred by multiple domestic violence allegations documented in the police report.
According to the police report, Lawlor claimed that the former partners’ situation escalated when Nicholson allegedly texted Lawlor, claiming he had taken a full bottle of Valium and threatened to kill himself if she didn’t come to see him. Concerned for his well-being, Lawlor went to his apartment in Venice, Calif., even though they hadn’t talked or seen each other since last year.
What began as a conversation reportedly devolved into a heated argument about infidelity. At one point, Lawlor allegedly grabbed Nicholson’s phone to check for signs of further drug use. According to a source, Nicholson had lied about his current drug use — a betrayal that deeply concerned Lawlor, who had previously supported him through sobriety. Around 5:30 p.m., per the report’s recounting of the victim’s allegations, Nicholson allegedly grabbed Lawlor by the neck and head and threw her into an unidentified hard object and she fell unconscious.
“Victim stated that she blacked out and when she opened her eyes realized her tooth had broken,” the investigative report claims. Dazed and in pain, Lawlor allegedly fled the apartment and was found by a security guard. Shortly after, Nicholson escorted her back upstairs.
According to a source, Lawlor later sent photos of her injuries to Nicholson’s mother, Jennifer Nicholson, who then called 911. Two police officers arrived at the scene and took photographs. Lawlor reported pain in both her head and mouth. Lawlor was transported by ambulance to Marina Del Rey Hospital, where she was treated for a chipped front tooth requiring surgery, stitches and sustained facial injuries.
On Aug. 7, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed Nicholson was arrested on a felony charge of “corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant.” According to the police report, he was booked for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon — described in the report as “hands, feet and teeth.” He was released on $50,000 bond that evening, per arrest records obtained by PEOPLE, and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 26. If convicted, he faces up to four years in state prison.
Two weeks after the alleged assault, Lawlor filed a restraining order, which was temporarily granted by a judge on Monday, Aug. 11. A court hearing is set for Sept. 2 in the Santa Monica courthouse.
Nicholson has not publicly responded to the allegations. PEOPLE has reached out to his legal representatives and to Jack Nicholson’s camp for comment.
