Luigi Mangione, the Ivy League graduate who has been charged in connection with the murder of healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is working as an orderly at the facility where he is being held, PEOPLE has learned.
Mangione, 27, is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC), which hosts other high-profile suspects such as Sean “Diddy” Combs and, until recently, convicted fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried.

According to federal prison consultant Sam Mangel, Mangione is an orderly at MDC and appears to be well settled.

“He seemed to be perfectly well adjusted,” Mangel, who claims his client briefly shared a cell with Mangione, exclusively tells PEOPLE.
The role of an orderly includes cleaning showers and common areas.
“There’s very few jobs somebody can get in a detention center because of the amount of restriction,” Mangel tells PEOPLE. “Orderly tends to be one of the only ones, and does require mop and bucket,” adding that inmates “can be very fastidious, and they like clean showers.”
Mangione, who is being held on terrorism, murder and stalking charges, has maintained contact with his well-wishers since his arrest, expressing gratitude for their support. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
