Sean “Diddy” Combs’ blockbuster trial continues for a second day Tuesday, May 13.
The long-awaited proceeding in federal court in Manhattan kicked off Monday with opening statements. Prosecutors painted a picture of Combs as a violent individual running a criminal enterprise, based on coercing people — using drugs, threats and physical force — to participate in orchestrated sex acts called “freak offs.”
Authorities say Combs’ enterprise is tied to sexual abuse, drug crimes, arson and kidnapping offenses.
Combs’ attorneys countered that the prosecution was digging into his private sex life, and said the allegations may constitute domestic violence but not sex trafficking.
The rap mogul was indicted on charges of sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty and denies all wrongdoing.
The jury heard Monday from Israel Florez, a former security guard at Los Angeles’ InterContinental Hotel who said he witnessed the aftermath of Diddy’s alleged 2016 assault on Casandra “Cassie” Ventura, his ex-girlfriend whom prosecutors say was forced to participate in freak offs. Florez said Combs attempted to bribe him with $100,000 to keep quiet and get rid of CCTV evidence.
Jurors also heard from Daniel Phillip, a male escort who testified that he overheard Combs hit Ventura after she paid him for sex.
On Tuesday, jurors are expected to hear testimony from Ventura, the government’s star witness.
