A man suspected of killing his wife after she was found dead in a California forest has surrendered to authorities after fleeing to Peru.
On Wednesday, Aug. 27, the Policía Nacional del Perú shared a video on X and Facebook, showing Jossimar Cabrera Cornejo, 36, handcuffed at the Interpol Lima headquarters following the death of his wife, Sheylla Cabrera, 33.
“Jossimar Cabrera Cornejo, the prime suspect in the murder of a Peruvian citizen in the U.S. and currently under Red Notice, surrendered this morning at Interpol Lima headquarters and is being held in preventive detention,” Police wrote in a translated message alongside the clip on Wednesday.
The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (LASD) added in a release on Wednesday that they had been “notified by the Consulate General of Peru that Jossimar Cabrera, the wanted murder suspect from Lancaster, was taken into custody. Cabrera surrendered to authorities in Lima, Peru.”
“It will take several months in order to extradite Cabrera to the United States, but with a current order in place, he will be kept in Peruvian custody pending his extradition. This information is still pending official correspondence,” the release added.
As previously reported by PEOPLE, Sheylla’s body was found over the side of an embankment in Angeles National Forest at approximately 10 a.m. local time on the morning of Aug. 16. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and a cause of death is yet to be revealed, the LASD said in a statement at the time.
The following week, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirmed an extradition arrest warrant had been filed against Jossimar, per an Aug. 22 release.
He was charged with one count of murder with allegations of using a knife as a deadly weapon, the release stated.
“Sheylla Lisbet Cabrera, 33, was allegedly killed by the defendant on Aug. 10 at the Lancaster apartment where they and their three children lived. It is alleged that Jossimar Cabrera Cornejo then took his children and fled to Perú,” the release added.
The DA’s Office said, “If convicted as charged, he faces a possible maximum sentence of 26 years to life in state prison.”

On the day Sheylla’s body was found, the couple’s three children were also discovered safe in Peru and taken into protective custody on Aug. 16.
Amid the investigation into the victim’s death, footage emerged appearing to show Jossimar dragging a large object from the Lancaster Boulevard apartment complex where the family lived, per NBC Los Angeles.
