A Texas high school student is accused of fatally stabbing a classmate with scissors over a $21 vape pen.

On Wednesday, Dec. 17, Aundre Lebron Demond Matthews, 18, of Baytown, was arrested and charged with murder in connection with the death of Andrew Meismer, 16, according to the criminal complaint obtained by PEOPLE.

He is being held on a $3 million bond as he awaits his next court date on Jan. 7, according to online court records.

The incident came to authorities’ attention at 10:42 a.m. on Dec. 17, when police were called to Ross S. Sterling High School in Baytown about a report of an aggravated assault, according to Baytown Police.

In court on Friday, Dec. 19, prosecutors detailed the alleged events that led to the stabbing.

Surveillance footage shows the two friends walking into a classroom together at about 10:30 a.m. — and at that point, they seemed friendly toward each other, prosecutors said, Click2Houston reports.

Meismer, a sophomore, and then Matthews, a senior, each asked the teacher if they could be excused to go to the restroom, according to prosecutors, KHOU reports.

When the two students were in the bathroom, an argument allegedly ensued about a THC vape pen Matthews accused Meismer of stealing, prosecutors said, ABC 13 reports.

Matthews told officers he had followed Meismer into the bathroom, where he searched the teen for the vape pen and found a pair of scissors and put them in his own waistband, prosecutors allege, KHOU reports.

The two left the bathroom and went into an empty lab classroom, where a female student overheard Matthews accuse Meismer of stealing the vape pen, prosecutors allege, Click2Houston reports.

Matthews told Meismer he owed him about $21 for the missing pen.

The female student said she saw Matthews strike Meismer before the two started fighting, prosecutors allege, Click2Houston reports.

Matthews allegedly told police that Meismer pushed him away when he tried to search him, which led to another fight, prosecutors allege, Click2Houston reports.

Matthews said Meismer punched him in the head twice, prosecutors allege.

Afraid he was about to be beaten up by someone he believed was bigger than him, Matthews grabbed the scissors and stabbed Meismer, prosecutors allege he told police.

Moments later, the female student saw a large amount of blood coming from Meismer’s neck, prosecutors allege, Click2Houston reports.

Hearing the female student yell for help, the teacher raced into the lab classroom, saw Matthews holding Meismer around the neck, and tried to pull Matthews off of Meismer, prosecutors allege, Click2Houston reports.

Meismer was flown to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, per ABC 13.

He died of a puncture wound to the neck, authorities said.

In court, Matthews’s court-appointed attorney Gianpaolo Macerola asked the judge for a $500,000 bond, arguing that the teen has no prior criminal history, KHOU reports.

Meismer’s death sent shockwaves through the school and the community.

Meismer’s girlfriend, Ikelle Fevrier, said her slain boyfriend was well-liked at school, KHOU reports. “He had deep connections with everyone and I’m trying not to only think of myself right now and also support everyone who loved him,” she said.

Matthews’s attorney did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
