NEED TO KNOW

  • Zenaida Alvarez was fatally stabbed in her friend’s home while she was visiting the friend with her children over the weekend
  • Leosbey Cuesta de Armas, her ex-partner, has been arrested in connection with her killing
  • Cuesta de Armas uploaded a happy photo of the former couple on his Facebook hours after he allegedly stabbed Alvarez

A Florida man has been accused of fatally stabbing his ex-partner after following her to a different city where she was spending time with a friend putting up Christmas decorations.

Police responding to a report of a stabbing at a residence in Lehigh Acres, Fla., on Saturday, Nov. 8, found Zenaida Alvarez, 39, with multiple stab wounds, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said earlier this week.

Alvarez, who was not named at the press conference but identified by family members to Gulf Coast News, died at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.

Authorities identified 31-year-old Leosbey Cuesta de Armas as Alvarez’s ex-partner and the suspect in connection with the killing.

Investigators allege Cuesta de Armas, of Hilaleah, Fla., followed Alvarez to her friend’s house over the weekend, where she was visiting the friend with her children and putting up Christmas decorations.

Cuesta de Armas, the sheriff’s office alleged, was hiding in a pantry of the residence when the friend saw him “glaring at her, holding a knife” through a small opening of the pantry door. When the witness “screamed in terror,” he rushed past her and allegedly began repeatedly stabbing Alvarez, even after she had collapsed.

He then rushed out of the home without saying a word, according to investigators.

Cuesta de Armas was arrested on Sunday, Nov. 9, after allegedly escaping to Hardee County, where he led the authorities on a chase and drove into a pole in Polk County, the Hardee County Sheriff’s Office announced that day.

However, it appears he was active on social media between Alvarez’s killing and his arrest, sharing photos and giving his viewers a seemingly false impression of his relationship with the victim.

A Facebook account matching the name, description and location of Cuesta de Armas shared a photo early Sunday morning of him with a woman — who matches the description of Alvarez from her obituary.

The photo shows the two of them at a beach, with two users congratulating him and complimenting him in the comments. A third comment, however, shows a person alleging Cuesta de Armas had killed his cousin.

“…my cousin is unfortunately dead and my family going through this pain. I don’t know how that man had the courage to upload that photo,” read part of the comment, written originally in Spanish. “Please don’t comment my family is devastated by this tragedy.”

Zenaida Alvarez

Alvarez was a mother of two, her family told Gulf Coast News, adding that she was loved by everyone and was always helping people.

Cuesta de Armas is facing charges of second-degree murder and burglary with battery in Lee County, the sheriff’s office said. He is also facing aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and fleeing with reckless disregard out of Polk County.

Online court document searches did not garner any records for Cuesta de Armas in either Lee County or Polk County as of Thursday, Nov. 13.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for further information.
