NEED TO KNOW

  • Two Gwinnett County Police officers were shot at a Georgia hotel on Sunday, Feb. 1
  • Officer Pradeep Tamang, 25, was killed in the attack
  • Officer David Reed remains in critical but stable condition

One officer was killed, and another was critically injured in a shooting at a Georgia hotel.

Gwinnett County Police identified the slain officer as 25-year-old Pradeep Tamang.

Police said Officer David Reed remains in critical but stable condition after the Sunday, Feb. 1, shooting.

According to a Georgia Bureau of Investigation press release, Reed and Tamang responded to the Holiday Inn on 1790 E. Park Place Blvd. in Stone Mountain at 7:30 a.m. “in reference to an allegation of credit card theft.”

“Earlier in the day, an individual from South Carolina called police and reported that their credit card was fraudulently used at the Holiday Inn,” per the GBI press release.

When they arrived, the officers confronted 35-year-old Kevin Andrews inside the room rented to Andrews and “spoke with him about the fraudulent use of the credit card,” the release alleges.

According to the GBI, officers attempted to arrest Andrews, but he allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired at the officers, hitting both of them.

One of the officers returned fire, per the release.

Both officers were taken to the hospital, and so was Andrews, who sustained a gunshot wound.

According to the GBI, Andrews was charged with one count of malice murder, one count of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault upon a public safety officer and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Reed joined the Gwinnett County Police Department in September 2015 and graduated from the 94th Police Academy, the Gwinnett County Police Department wrote on Facebook.

Tamang became a police officer with the Gwinnett County Police Department in July 2024.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp wrote on X that he was “mourning the loss of a brave officer and are praying for the swift recovery of another.”

“This is the latest reminder of the dangers law enforcement face on a daily basis, and we are grateful for every one that puts themselves in harm’s way to protect their fellow Georgians,” Kemp said.
