A former California postal worker, who stole checks, debit and credit cards from the mail over a period of at least three years, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud on Monday, Aug. 11.
Mary Ann Magdamit, who worked as a letter carrier at the Torrance, Calif., Main Post Office, began stealing mail with checks, debit and credit cards and personal information in at least 2022, through July 2025, the U.S. Attorney’s Office Central District of California said in a statement, citing her plea agreement and court documents. She later activated the stolen cards online to make purchases and sold some to co-conspirators, federal prosecutors said.
The former postal worker, 31, was arrested by federal agents on July 1 and has been in federal custody since then.

Magdamit had her co-conspirators cash the stolen checks using fake identity documents, according to federal prosecutors. “Federally insured banks and credit unions were victimized in this scheme,” the Justice Department said.
Magdamit was caught flaunting the fruits of her crime with a photo she shared on social media, displaying a thick stack of cash, before using it to pay for lavish items and trips to Turks and Caicos and Aruba, prosecutors said. Also among the luxury goods purchased was a Rolex watch.

After a search of her home in December 2024, authorities seized 133 stolen credit and debit cards, 16 U.S. Department of Treasury checks, and a loaded ghost gun. She was arrested on July 1 after federal agents discovered she was still using the stolen credit cards. That same day, agents searched her apartment again and found more stolen cards.
A ghost gun refers to a gun that “lacks a serial number by which it can be identified and that is typically assembled by the user (as from purchased or homemade components),” per Merriam Webster.
Magdamit faces up to 30 years in federal prison. Her sentencing hearing is scheduled for Oct. 27.
