A New York father was fatally shot outside a Bronx elementary school on Tuesday, April 16, a New York Police Department (NYPD) spokesperson confirmed to PEOPLE.

Carlos Teron, 34, an amateur boxer, was shot in the head just before 11 p.m. local time on Clinton Avenue near East 178th Street outside The Colibrí Community School.

Authorities responded to the scene and found Carlos unconscious and unresponsive. He was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased, the NYPD spokesperson confirmed.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

His brother, Jorge Teron, speculated that Carlos was shot, allegedly by someone he had previously had a physical altercation with, he told The New York Post. “We’re not sure if [the shooter was] the same person he had the altercation with in that neck of the woods,” Jorge said. “I’m not sure why he was there at 11 at night. Nothing good happens at 11 at night.”

Carlos had recently become a father, after he and his wife welcomed their son, Cairo, two months prior, Jorge, told the outlet.

Jorge, 39, said that his sister-in-law informed him of Carlos’ death. “I said, ‘What’s going on?’ and she finally told me what happened, and I started screaming,” Jorge, a Las Vegas-based boxer told the outlet. “It’s something no one ever expected — no call like that.”

“He had a 2-month-old baby boy at home,” Jorge said. “Things were looking up for him. He just got a new car. He was working, he just got a new apartment and car. Things were really looking good for him, and he was excited.”

Carlos was a sanitation worker for a private company for 15 years, Jorge said. He noted that his younger brother, who was “a very good amateur boxer,” competed in over 100 amateur fights throughout his career, which spanned from 2004 to 2008.

He participated in the acclaimed New York Daily News Golden Gloves tournament and was victorious in the 2007 USA Boxing Junior Metropolitan Championships finals.

“He wanted to be a boxer just like me,” Jorge said. “He was a very good boxer himself, not just because of me, but he was just a good boxer by himself.”

Carlos was an “introvert” who was “a great brother, great father, great friend, always someone you can count on,” Jorge continued.

Jorge and Carlos’ family created a GoFundMe page to help raise money for Carlos’ funeral and memorial services.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved brother, Carlos Teron, who left us unexpectedly last night,” read the page description.

“Our family is heartbroken and still processing this immense loss. Carlos was a kind, caring, and genuine soul who touched so many lives with his warmth and presence.”
