  • Sian Andre Spence, 47, was booked into jail on three counts of animal cruelty
  • The owner of the dogs, Bianca Green, told Local 10 that the postal worker claimed her dogs tried to bite him, but she didn’t believe him

A Florida mailman is facing animal cruelty charges after a local news station shared surveillance video of him allegedly dousing three dogs with pepper spray.

Sian Andre Spence, 47, was arrested by Lauderhill police on Wednesday, Jan. 28 and booked into jail on three counts of animal cruelty, according to Broward County Sheriff’s Office arrest records reviewed by PEOPLE.

He’s being held on $3,500 bond, the records show. It’s unclear if he has entered a plea or retained an attorney to speak on his behalf.

The arrest comes two days after Local 10 aired the footage of the postal worker — identified by police as Spence — allegedly pepper-spraying Bianca Green’s three Shih Tzu-poodles while making a mail delivery on Jan. 2.

Green told the news station that the mailman claimed her dogs tried to bite him but she didn’t believe him, saying her small dogs “can’t do anything other than bark.” She also claimed that he sprayed them before he approached the mailbox and that the dogs reacted by “digging their face in the dirt.”

“I didn’t expect [the arrest] to happen like this and so quickly,” she told Local 10, adding that it brings her relief.

The United States Postal Service, where Spence has been employed for five years, said earlier this week that his “current employment status is pending an internal review,” Local 10 reported.

In a statement shared with PEOPLE on Friday, Jan. 30, a USPS spokesperson said, “Regarding your request, the individual in question remains employed by the Postal Service and is not currently on active duty. Due to privacy concerns, the Postal Service does not publicly discuss matters involving its personnel.”

PEOPLE reached out to Lauderhill police for comment but did not immediately hear back.
