  • Sherrone Moore was fired as the head football coach at the University of Michigan for allegedly engaging in an “inappropriate relationship”
  • Hours after he was fired, he was detained by the Pittsfield Township Police Department
  • Police said they responded to a location in Pittsfield Township “for the purposes of investigating an alleged assault” and that a “suspect in this case was taken into custody”

Sherrone Moore, the former University of Michigan Wolverines head football coach, was detained by police on Wednesday, Dec. 10 after officers responded to an “alleged assault.”

Hours before he was detained, the University of Michigan fired Moore, 39, after an investigation found “credible” evidence that he allegedly engaged in an “inappropriate relationship” with a staff member.

The City of Saline Police Department “assisted in locating and detaining” Moore, 39, who was “turned over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for investigation,” the Saline Police Department said in a statement to ESPN.

In its own statement, the Pittsfield Township Police Department said it responded to a location in Pittsfield Township, Mich., at 4:10 p.m. on Dec. 10 “for the purposes of investigating an alleged assault.”

“A suspect in this case was taken into custody,” the statement continued, adding that there “appears to be no ongoing threat to the community.”

The suspect was “lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail pending review of charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor,” the statement continued. “At this time, the investigation is ongoing.”

Pittsfield police said they were “prohibited form releasing additional details” at this time, but more information would be released in the future.

Hours earlier, Moore was fired “with cause,” according to the university. His firing came after the university conducted an investigation and found “credible evidence” that Moore allegedly “engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member,” University of Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel said.

Manuel confirmed that, “effective immediately,” associate coach Biff Poggi will serve as the team’s interim head coach.

Poggi served as the interim earlier in the season as Moore served a two-week suspension. Poggi led the team to victories against Central Michigan and Nebraska on Sept. 13 and Sept. 20, respectively.

Moore was suspended for NCAA violations linked to the illegal advanced scouting scheme, which allegedly involved former staffer Connor Stalions, according to WBDJ. He was also set to miss the 2026 season opener for a one-game suspension, reports ESPN.

Moore began his career with Michigan as a tight end coach in 2018. Later, he served as acting head coach during Jim Harbaugh’s suspensions during the 2023 season. Moore was the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach during Michigan’s victory over the Washington Huskies in the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship in January 2024.

Ahead of the 2025 season, Moore was named head coach after Harbaugh left Michigan to coach the Los Angeles Chargers.

In 2025, Michigan finished with a 9-3 record. Poggi will coach the team for the Dec. 31 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against the University of Texas Longhorns.
