Federal Officers Shoot and Kill Armed Man in Minneapolis, Officials Say By Nicholas Rice

One person is dead following a shooting involving officers with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in Minneapolis.

At around 9:00 a.m. local time on Saturday, Jan. 24, “DHS law enforcement officers were conducting a targeted operation in Minneapolis against an illegal alien wanted for violent assault,” DHS assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin told PEOPLE in a statement.

McLaughlin claimed that a man — whose identity has not been made public — “approached” U.S. Border Patrol officers while armed with a handgun and “violently resisted” as they attempted to disarm him, saying an agent then fired “defensive shots.”

“Medics on scene immediately delivered medical aid to the subject, but was pronounced dead at the scene,” McLaughlin continued.

According to the DHS assistant secretary, “The suspect also had 2 magazines and no ID.”

During a Jan. 24 press conference, Minneapolis police said the deceased is a 37-year-old White male from the city who they believe was a lawful gun owner. Police Chief Brian O’Hara said that to his knowledge, the man’s only previous interaction with law enforcement was for parking tickets.

O’Hara said preliminary details about the incident suggested that there was “more than one law enforcement officer involved in the discharge” and pointed to “public video that shows several law enforcement officers in a scuffle with someone.”

Questioned about the DHS’ account of the incident, he said “the video speaks for itself.”

At least 200 protesters arrived near the scene soon after, The Associated Press reported, leading to confrontations between federal law enforcement and locals.

The City of Minneapolis told PEOPLE in a prior statement on Jan. 24, “We are aware of reports of another shooting involving federal law enforcement in the area of 26th Street W and Nicollet Ave.”

“We are working to confirm additional details. We ask the public to remain calm and avoid the immediate area,” the statement continued. (The City of Minneapolis shared the same statement in an X post.)

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz reacted to the incident in a post on X.

“I just spoke with the White House after another horrific shooting by federal agents this morning. Minnesota has had it. This is sickening,” he wrote.

“The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now,” Walz, 61, added, referring to Donald Trump’s use of federal agents in the state.

When reached for comment, an ICE spokesperson directed PEOPLE to the DHS.

This incident took place weeks after a woman, Renee Good, was killed in the city by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent.
