NEED TO KNOW

  • CBS News analyzed footage from the night of Jeffrey Epstein’s death in jail
  • The footage reportedly does not back up claims stemming from the government’s investigation
  • Epstein died by suicide in a Manhattan jail in 2019

An investigation into the jail surveillance video from the night Jeffrey Epstein died conducted by CBS News reportedly revealed inconsistencies in the government’s report on the death of the disgraced financier.

Epstein was found dead in his cell in a Manhattan jail in 2019 after he was indicted on sex trafficking charges. The billionaire, in addition to allegations that he sex trafficked underage girls, was noted for his connections to powerful figures like President Donald Trump, former President Bill Clinton and Prince Andrew.

The death was ruled a suicide, a controversial ruling that has become conspiracy fodder and the subject of intense scrutiny.

CBS reviewed the surveillance footage from the night of Epstein’s death and said it did not find evidence that supported some claims made in the government’s official review, though the network did not find anything to suggest he died by any means other than suicide.

But CBS did report, citing experts, that the video released by the Justice Department does not appear to be the original raw footage and instead appears to be a screen recording based on the fact that a cursor and menu appear on screen.

The network also noted that the FBI claimed surveillance cameras would have captured anyone entering or exiting the area where Epstein’s cell was located.

But analysis of the footage reportedly shows that the staircase up to the cell’s floor is almost completely out of view of the camera and the entrance to the cell itself is out of the camera’s view.

The report also calls into question the government’s explanation of an orange shape seen moving up the stairs the night of Epstein’s death.

CBS reported that the inspector general determined that the shape was a correctional officer carrying linen or inmate clothing.

However, forensic video experts told CBS that shape could have been a person in an orange prison jumpsuit.

“Based on the limited video, it’s more likely it’s a person in an [orange] uniform,” retired NYPD sergeant and forensic video expert Conor McCourt told the network.

The video feed also jumps forward a minute just before midnight and the aspect ratio changes, again calling into question the assertion the video released was the raw footage.

CBS further reported that minutes after midnight, an unidentified person is seen moving through the unit.

CBS reported that the FBI and the Bureau of Prisons declined to comment, though the inspector general’s office did respond in a statement.

“The OIG appreciates the careful review of our report. Our comprehensive assessment of the circumstances over the weeks, days, and hours before Epstein’s death included the effects of the longstanding, chronic staffing crisis in the BOP and the BOP’s failure to provide and maintain quality camera coverage within its facilities,” the reported statement said. “As CBS notes, nothing in its analysis changed or modified the OIG’s conclusions or recommendations.”
