NEED TO KNOW

  • A Louisiana boy who lives in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans was kidnapped at gunpoint from a bus stop and taken to a vacant home on Sept. 19
  • The 10-year-old boy then had to strip to his underwear, said his mother, so his captors could take pictures
  • When the kidnappers went to get a camera, the boy allegedly kicked down the door and fled with another young boy being held there

A Louisiana boy managed to flee from his captors after allegedly being kidnapped at his bus stop after school last week.

It all happened just before 5 p.m. on Sept. 19, when the 10-year-old boy was walking near his home in New Orleans’ Algiers neighborhood, a spokesperson for the New Orleans Police Department tells PEOPLE.

The boy said that he was suddenly approached by two unknown suspects who pulled out a gun, threw him into a van and drove off to an abandoned house in the neighborhood, according to police.

Once inside the house, the boy said that the men had a strange request.

“They were going to try to take a photo of me, like I don’t know, but when they tried to do that, that was when one of them left,” he said in an interview with WVUE. “The other one said, ‘I’ll be right back.'”

According to the boy, there was another boy around the same age as the victim inside the abandoned building — and the two agreed that after one of the men left, the boys agreed it would be a good time to flee.

“They [the men] locked the door, so they made sure the door was locked, and that was when we tried to kick the door, and I kicked the door, and that’s when I had kicked the door down, and I had ran,” the boy told WVUE.

Video captured the moment the boy managed to escape from the home as his father — who had been out searching for the boy — saw his son and rushed to his side.

Later that day, the boy found that his clothes and backpack were placed across the street from his family’s home.

The boy’s mother said in an interview with WSAZ that the kidnappers had instructed her son to strip down to his underwear — and that’s all he had on when he fled from the home.
