Trial is underway for a Virginia man who is accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend and then claiming she committed suicide.
Huy Nguyen was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Alison “Kate” Laporta in 2024.
The case came to light on April 18, 2024, when officers were called to the Mount Vernon Hospital around 11:35 p.m. Laporta was suffering from a gunshot wound to her upper body and had been transported to the hospital by Nguyen, the Fairfax County Police Department said. Laporta was then transferred to Fairfax Hospital where she died.
Nguyen allegedly “initially told officers the shooting occurred in a parking lot,” per a Fairfax County police press release. “Through their investigation, detectives disproved that allegation. Detectives determined Nguyen shot Laporta inside the vehicle. He then drove her to the hospital.”
Per the release, police discovered the weapon used in the killing near Nguyen’s home in Lorton.
A witness at Nguyen’s trial testified that he heard Nguyen, who was at a bar earlier in the evening with Laporta, say: “The only way this argument ends is with a bullet,” NBC4 reported.
Another witness testified that Nguyen allegedly said: “I’m going to shoot this girl.”
Prosecutors said the fatal bullet was found in the backseat of the vehicle, per the outlet. Nguyen’s attorneys argued there was no evidence that Nguyen was the shooter and that it was the mother of two who shot herself.

During the trial, the defense team also introduced hundreds of pages of medical records from two years prior to Laporta’s death when she allegedly suffered a mental health issue, according to NBC4.
A GoFundMe page described the woman as a “strong and loving mom” who “worked as a dedicated Safeway employee for over six years where she started as a cashier and worked her way up to management.”
“Those fortunate enough to have known Kate understand the immense loss of a kind and loving mother and we are all holding Kate and her two children in our prayers,” the fundraiser read.
