NEED TO KNOW
- Emmanuel Haro was likely killed days before his parents reported he was kidnapped from the parking lot of a sporting goods store
- The 7-month-old child died after allegedly being ‘severely abused over a period of time” said Riverside County District Attorney Michael Hestrin
- Both of Emmanuel’s parents are under arrest on murder charges
New details surrounding the death of 7-month-old Emmanuel Haro were shared by California officials during a press conference on Wednesday.
“The filing in this case reflects our belief that baby Emmanuel was abused, a victim of child abuse over time and that eventually because of that abuse, he succumbed to those injuries,” said Riverside County District Attorney Michael Hestrin.
The filing he referred to is the criminal complaint charging Emmanuel’s parents, Jake and Rebecca Haro, with their son’s murder.
Rebecca had reported that her son was kidnapped on Aug. 14 when she was knocked unconscious while changing the child’s diaper in the parking lot of a sporting goods store in Yucaipa, a city located 10 miles east of San Bernardino.
Investigators allegedly found inconsistencies with Rebecca’s story, and soon identified her and her husband Jake as the prime suspects in their son’s disappearance and later murder.
Authorities now believe that Emmanuel was killed days before, with the last known sighting of the child occurring on Aug. 5, according to a copy of the criminal complaint obtained by PEOPLE.
Hestrin also reiterated on Wednesday that they have an idea as to where the remains of Emmanuel are located, but would not provide any specific information.
On Sunday, investigators were seen searching for the child with his father after Jake and Rebecca were taken into custody on suspicion of murder.
The pair appeared in court on Tuesday, at which time their arraignment was set for Sept. 4.
Hestrin also took aim at the judge who gave Jake a suspended sentence after he entered a guilty plea to a charge of willful child neglect in 2023.
“In 2018, Jake Haro with his ex-wife were prosecuted for child abuse as well as child neglect, cruelty. That child was also an infant and that came to the courts in 2023. We charged various felony crimes — child abuse, child cruelty — and our indication, or what we wanted out of the case was prison. We believed it was a prison case and that Jake Haro should have gone to prison,” Hestrin said.

Court records obtained by PEOPLE show that Jake entered a guilty plea to a single count of willful child cruelty after that 2018 incident.
That case involved his 10-week-old daughter with a different woman, who was found to have suffered severe abuse after arriving at the hospital.
One of the doctors who examined the child said that her “condition could have been fatal if medical attention was not sought,” according to a copy of Jake’s 2018 arrest warrant that was obtained by PEOPLE.
Jake alleged that the injuries suffered by the infant were caused after he dropped the child in the sink while washing her.
Doctors said that the child had a brain hemorrhage, multiple rib fractures, a cervical spine injury, retinal hemorrhages and had suffered at least two seizures — and that there was no possible way a child could sustain all of those injuries just by being dropped in a sink.
“The history of a short fall onto the kitchen sink does not explain her extensive and severe head trauma or her multiple bilateral rib fractures,” the arrest warrant read.
Despite his guilty plea, the judge suspended Jake’s 6-year prison sentence and placed him on probation for 4 years.
Less than a year later, Jake allegedly violated his probation after being charged with owning a firearm.
“Mr. Haro should have been in prison at the time that this crime happened, and if that judge had done his job as he should have done, Emmanuel would be alive today,” Hestin said on Tuesday,
“And that’s a shame and it’s an outrage. And I hate to say that, but when our criminal justice system breaks down, I’m going to just call it like it is and tell you it broke down. It’s not how it’s supposed to work.”
Hestrin then said that the 10-week-old infant is now 7-years-old, bedridden and suffers from cerebral palsy due to the injuries her father inflicted upon her.
San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus referred to Jake as an “experienced child abuser” during the press conference, where it was also announced at the press conference that Jake and Rebecca’s 2-year-old child had been removed from their home.
A public defender representing the couple did not respond to a request for comment, Court records show that they are each being held on $1 million bail.
