At least 11 people are dead and 12 others have been wounded after a mass shooting in Mexico.
On Sunday, Jan. 25, a group of gunmen opened fire during a soccer game in Salamanca, Guanajuato. Ten people died at the scene, while another died in the hospital, national news outlets Excelsior and El Universal reported, citing Mayor César Prieto Gallardo.
“Likewise, 12 people were injured by gunfire and are receiving medical attention,” said authorities, per El Universal.
Prieto Gallardo revealed in a video shared on social media that a woman and a child were among those injured in the “regrettable and cowardly” attack, according to Reuters.
“This incident adds to a wave of violence that we are sadly experiencing in the state, and particularly in Salamanca,” he said, per the outlet. “Unfortunately, criminal groups are trying to subjugate the authorities, which they will not achieve.”
An investigation was “immediately” launched following the attack, Excelsior reported. The Guanajuato State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) is coordinating with federal authorities to collect evidence and reinforce security measures.
