At least one person is dead and another is in the hospital after two separate shootings at an HBCU in South Carolina.
On Saturday, Oct. 4, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) launched an investigation following two separate shootings at South Carolina State University (SCSU) in Orangeburg that had taken place that evening.
A woman was killed in one of the shootings and a man was rushed to the hospital after being injured in the second incident, SLED said in a news release obtained by PEOPLE.
The HBCU initially issued an alert after reports of shots at Hugine Suites, a student housing facility on campus, according to local outlets WCIV, WRDW and WIS News 10. The shootings occurred during homecoming celebrations following an annual football game, WRDW reported, citing officials.
“The shootings are not believed to be connected at this time, however, SLED’s investigations are active and ongoing,” SLED said, per the news release.
The identities of the woman killed and the man injured have not yet been made public.
The campus remained in lockdown on Sunday, Oct. 5, with an official alert on the SCSU website providing students and visitors with instructions.
“The South Carolina State University campus is on lockdown following a shooting,” the alert reads. “All Homecoming events scheduled for Sunday have been canceled. If you are not a current student, please do not attempt to come to campus.”

The alert also instructs any residents of Hugine Suites, who are not currently in the dormitory, to report to Smith–Hammond–Middleton Memorial Center, an Orangeburg arena. Anyone in the dorm, meanwhile, should “stay put,” the alert says.
“Students in other residence halls return to your rooms. Off-campus residents, please exit the campus,” the alert concludes.
