NEED TO KNOW

  • Antonio Brown was arrested in Dubai and extradited to the U.S. to face an attempted murder charge in connection with a May shooting in Miami
  • The shooting occurred at a celebrity boxing match hosted by streamer Adin Ross
  • Afterward, Brown told Ross that he had “CTE” and didn’t remember what happened

Antonio Brown, the former NFL star, is in custody after an arrest warrant issued in June accused him of attempted murder.

Brown was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Dubai and has been extradited to New Jersey, PEOPLE previously reported. He is expected to be moved to Florida, where he will face an attempted murder charge.

The charge stems from a shooting that occurred at celebrity boxing event hosted by streamer Adin Ross in Miami in May.

“Following a thorough investigation … Antonio Brown (AB) has been identified as the shooter,” the Miami Police Department said in a statement to PEOPLE. “This is just another example of the relentless work and dedication of Miami Police Detectives, working closely with Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, and U.S. Marshals to identify and arrest those who commit crimes in the City of Miami.”

Video footage of the incident posted on X appeared to show Brown fighting with a group of people before the group proceeds to a nearby alley.

Brown could later be seen running toward the group, holding something seconds before a sound resembling gun shots can be heard.

On Ross’ subsequent Kick livestream, Brown alleged he had been “jumped by multiple individuals” and that he had CTE, a neurological disease that has been linked to repeated head trauma and has been found in hundreds of deceased football players.

“I got CTE, I blacked out,” Brown said. “I blacked out, Adin. I don’t know what happened.”

Brown was detained immediately after the shooting but was not formally arrested, the Associated Press reported at the time.

The former All-Pro wide receiver has had previous legal issues. In 2019, former trainer Britney Taylor accused him of sexual assault in a lawsuit. He denied the allegations and countersued before eventually settling.

In October 2023, Brown was arrested for allegedly failing to pay court-ordered child support to the mother of his eldest daughter. He was released after posting a $15,000 bond.

Brown spent 12 seasons in the NFL, primarily with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
