A 79-year-old Georgia woman is dead after an Amazon delivery driver allegedly struck and killed her — and then continued his delivery route, authorities said.
London Best, 24, of Alpharetta, was arrested on Tuesday, Nov. 12, and charged with first-degree vehicular homicide and hit-and-run resulting in death in connection to the death of Sandra Fitts of Canton, the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office said in a statement sent to PEOPLE.
Fitts had just visited a loved one’s gravesite and was crossing the street when she was hit and killed, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, WSB-TV, WSAZ 3 reported.
On the night of Nov. 12, at about 6:30 p.m. local time, deputies responded to a report of a hit-and-run accident involving a pedestrian on Cumming Highway near Jordan Lane.
Deputies who arrived at the scene allegedly found evidence that the vehicle involved in the crash was possibly an Amazon delivery truck, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
“A deputy had spotted an Amazon truck turn down Bishop Drive while responding to the accident and called for assistance to the area to search for the vehicle,” the Sheriff’s Office said in their statement.
A Canton Police officer located an Amazon truck on Bishop Drive with damage consistent with the evidence located at the accident scene, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
“The investigation revealed that the Amazon truck in question was the vehicle that struck the pedestrian,” the statement noted.
Best, the driver of the vehicle, was arrested and charged in connection with the hit-and-run.

“Had he not left the scene, the charges would be different. He likely wouldn’t have felonies,” Capt. Jay Baker, a spokesperson for the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, said, per Fox 5 Atlanta.
Additional charges were filed against Best after investigators obtained a search warrant for the van he was driving and allegedly found narcotics inside, the sheriff’s office said in the statement.
He faces new charges of possession of Marijuana less than 1 oz., possession of a Schedule 1 Narcotic (THC Wax) and possession of drug-related objects.
Best is being held without bond at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center. It is unclear whether he has retained an attorney who can speak on his behalf.
A spokesperson for Amazon said Best will not be able to perform any more deliveries for the company pending the outcome of the investigation, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.
