An Alabama man has been charged with murder after an argument with his sister turned deadly.
According to a statement published on Facebook by the Hoover Police Department (HPD), officers were dispatched to a house on the 700 block of Jasmine Way in Hoover at around 8:10 a.m. local time on Saturday, March 15, after receiving reports of a shooting.
Police said the suspect in the shooting, 40-year-old Jonathan Arthur Barclay, had already been detained by an off-duty state law enforcement officer, who had been nearby when the shooting occurred.
Court records obtained by PEOPLE show that Jonathan is the owner of the home.
A 55-year-old woman, identified as Jonathan’s sister, Rosalind Barclay, was found outside of the home with several gunshot wounds.
Medical personnel transported her to the UAB Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to police.
“Detectives determined the victim had arrived at the residence earlier in the morning, and an argument ensued,” police said. “The victim went outside the residence, where the argument continued near her vehicle.”
Jonathan then allegedly retrieved a firearm and shot his sister several times, police added. It is not currently known what caused the siblings’ argument.
Neighbors in the area who spoke with Al.com reported hearing a total of six gunshots go off at the time of the shooting.
The outlet reported that this is the first murder of 2025 in Hoover, a suburb of Birmingham.
