NEED TO KNOW

  • Jeremiah Thompson is speaking out after his wife Heather Thompson allegedly killed her two sons, her grandmother and herself in a suspected murder-suicide
  • The couple was separated but spoke daily, the grieving husband told local WSMV this week
  • “I just can’t believe she did this,” he said, adding that he still doesn’t “understand how this happened”

The grieving husband of a Tennessee woman accused of shooting and killing her two kids, and her grandmother, before taking her own life earlier this month is speaking out.

Jeremiah Thompson told local WSMV this week that there were no warning signs about his wife Heather Thompson’s mental health in the lead up to the Jan. 2 shooting at the family’s home.

Heather, 32, shot and killed her 4-year-old son Arius Thompson, her 13-year-old son Isaiah Johnson, and her 88-year-old grandmother Evelyn Johnson before turning the gun on herself and taking her own life, PEOPLE previously reported.

Her estranged husband told WSMV he’s still in shock roughly a week later.

“It’s my boys. I just can’t believe she did this,” Jeremiah, who is Arius’ father and Isaiah’s stepfather, told the outlet. “My wife was a good person. I just don’t understand how this happened.”

Jeremiah told WSMV that he and Heather were separated but still spoke daily. He lives in New Mexico while his wife had been living in Tennessee.

“If you were feeling overwhelmed, why didn’t you just let me know? You can just say, ‘Hey, Biah, I need a break. Can you please just take the boys for the summer or for the rest of the year?’ I would have gladly done that,” the father said during the emotional interview with WSMV.

The outlet reported that a funeral service for the four family members took place Tuesday night, where Jeremiah met with family and friends, including his son’s friends and classmates.

“I know when I go home, when I see my mother cry, that’s when I think everything will come out again,” the father told WSMV. “But right now, I’m just holding it together.”

Jeremiah launched a GoFundMe to help cover the expenses “to bring my boys back home to New Mexico from Tennessee,” he wrote, raising more than $17,600 in recent days.

The father also expressed his shock on social media on the night of the murder-suicide.

“As a father it hurt and shattered my soul to hear my sons, Arius (Ari) and Isaiah have been taken from me and are no longer with us,” he wrote. “They were just babies. Every second of today I wish I could just wake up.”

ABC affiliate WKRN reported Heather, her boys and her grandmother were residents of Humphreys County, Tenn.

Their bodies were discovered in the family’s home after the Humphreys County Sheriff’s Office conducted a welfare check on Jan. 2, WSMV previously reported.
