A man was shot and killed by police while actively stabbing his father, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
West Valley Patrol Division officers responded to a call about a “male with mental illness” at a residence on Valerio Street around 8:10 a.m., local time on Wednesday, Dec. 3.
“Comments of the call indicated the subject had been diagnosed with a mental illness and was acting erratically toward his father inside the residence,” LAPD said.
Although the man’s identity was not released, he was identified as “an adult son who had been violent towards family members in the past” by the LAPD on X.
The LAPD said that when officers arrived at the scene, they met with the subject’s brother, who explained that he went to the home after receiving a call from his mother, who was afraid for the father’s safety.
The brother told the LAPD that the subject “had a history of violence toward their parents, including stabbing their father eight years earlier and assaulting their mother.”

According to the LAPD, the man had also been confined to a mental health institute for several years due to these prior incidents.
Officers subsequently requested additional assistance and entered the residence where they found “the subject in the father’s bedroom, lying on top of his father on a bed while holding what appeared to be a knife.”

The man allegedly ignored officers’ commands and began stabbing his father, at which point the LAPD said an officer-involved shooting (OIS) occurred. The subject was struck by gunfire and detained.
The LAPD said that after the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) responded to the scene, both the subject and the father were pronounced deceased.
A pair of scissors and a kitchen knife were recovered at the scene and logged as evidence. No officers or additional community members were injured during the incident, LAPD said.
The Robbery Homicide Division is overseeing the homicide investigation and the Force Investigation Division is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
PEOPLE reached out to the LAPD, who said that no additional details about the incident were available at this time.
