NEED TO KNOW

  • Caysen Allison, 21, was sentenced to 10 years in prison without parole after being convicted of criminally negligent homicide in the death of Jose “Joe” Ramirez
  • The initial jury verdict set the sentencing range at six months to two years, but in May prosecutors successfully petitioned the court to add a deadly weapon stipulation
  • Ramirez was just 18 when he was stabbed to death by Allison, whose lawyer argued at trial that his actions that day were in self-defense

A Texas teenager who fatally stabbed a fellow student received the maximum sentence for his crime on June 23.

Caysen Allison, 21, will serve 10 years in prison after being convicted of criminally negligent homicide in the death of Jose “Joe” Luis Ramirez Jr.

Judge Wade Faulkner handed down that sentence after hearing testimony from school staff and relatives of the victim in the 478th Judicial District Court.

Ramirez was just 18 when he was stabbed by Allison on May 3, 2022 during a bathroom brawl at Belton High School, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by PEOPLE.

Allison’s attorney Zachary Boyd said that his client’s actions that day were all in self-defense after he was forced into fighting Ramirez and a group of his friends.

That argument resonated with the jury, who in April declined to convict Allison of murder or manslaughter and instead opted for the lesser of the three charges – criminally negligent homicide.

Allison initially faced a possible sentence of six months to two years in a state jail facility, until the judge sided with the prosecution on their motion to amend the jury’s verdict to include a deadly weapon stipulation.

The defense tried to fight the motion but were ultimately unsuccessful. As a result, Allison faced a minimum sentence of two years in prison and a maximum of 10 without the possibility of parole when he appeared in court this week.

Video of the fatal attack was shown in court during the trial.

A friend of Ramirez had been filming the brawl, and captured everything leading up to the stabbing.

The video allegedly shows Ramirez punching Allison, at which point Allison swings back at Ramirez with a knife in his hand, according to court documents.

Allison then allegedly cornered Ramirez, at which point the other teenagers ran from the bathroom.

School security cameras then captured the aftermath of the stabbing, according to court documents.

In that footage, Ramirez is allegedly seen leaving the bathroom and collapsing in the hallway as blood pools all around him, according to the arrest affidavit.

Allison was arrested later that same day and confessed to stabbing Ramirez, according to the affidavit.

He is now in custody awaiting his prison assignment from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, and will be given credit for the 74 days he spent in jail prior to posting bail.

Allison’s lawyer did not respond to a request for comment.
