Neighbors at a Houston area apartment complex grew concerned when they heard a loud argument break out between a resident and her boyfriend late Sunday night – then a gunshot rang out.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said this week that officers who responded to the disturbance call found 22-year-old Javion Williams dead in the stairwell at the Derby at Steeplechase Apartments, where Williams’ girlfriend Derricka Ross lived.
“He could not be saved and died on scene from at least one gunshot wound to the head,” a news release from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said.
“The victim and defendant were reportedly in a dating relationship,” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez wrote in a separate post on social media, adding that Williams had came to Ross’ apartment to collect his belongings when the argument broke out.
Ross was taken into custody and arrested at the scene, according to police. Harris County Jail records reviewed by PEOPLE show Ross remains in custody on a $150,000 bond. She has been charged with murder. It’s unclear whether Ross has entered a plea.

The couple got into an argument moments before neighbors heard a gunshot, according to a news release from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred around 9:14 p.m. on May 25, Fox 26 reported. Another 911 call came in minutes later, when police believe Ross shot Williams.
“The two had been in a dating relationship and the male complainant had arrived at the apartments with another male friend to move out some of his property from the suspect’s apartment,” the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said. “A verbal argument turned violent when the woman shot the man during the altercation.”
It remains unclear what led to the argument between the couple, though the sheriff’s office says Ross confessed to her boyfriend’s killing at the scene.
