A Man Yelling from the Woods, a 911 Call — and Then Police Found a Body and a Stunning Twist By KC Baker

A 20-year-old Connecticut man is in custody after allegedly admitting in a 911 call that he killed his mother.

Sebastian Van Stockum of New Canaan was arrested on Friday, Oct. 24 and charged with murder in connection with the death of his mother, according to the New Canaan Police Arrest Log.

At 10:36 p.m. on Friday night, police responded to reports of a male voice yelling from the woods.

While officers were on their way, a man called 911 from a home on Gerdes Road “stating that he killed his mother,” according to the arrest log.

Officers and EMS workers performed life-saving measures but the woman, who has not been publicly identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers immediately identified Van Stockum as a suspect. He was arrested and charged with murder. 

He remains held on a $2 million bond and is expected in court on Monday, Oct. 27.

In his mugshot, Van Stockum’s face appeared to be scratched and bloodied.

“As this incident is domestic in nature, no further information will be released,” the arrest log stated.

It is unclear whether Van Stockum has retained an attorney who can speak on his behalf.

New Canaan is an upscale suburban town where CEOs, billionaires and celebrities including Harry Connick Jr., David Letterman and Paul Simon have lived. 

The 2019 disappearance of New Canaan mother of five Jennifer Dulos made national headlines. Her husband, Fotis Dulos, was accused of killing her. He died by suicide before the case was adjudicated, but his accomplice, Michelle Troconis, was convicted on conspiracy charges and sentenced to 14 years in prison. Jennifer was declared legally dead in October 2023.
