A Fatal Night, a Family Torn Apart — But What Really Happened? Netflix Doc Explores Jason Corbett's Baseball Bat Killing

After the tragic 2006 death of his first wife Mags Fitzpatrick, the pieces of Jason Corbett’s life appeared to have fallen back into place when he met and fell in love with an American woman who embraced life with him and his children.

Corbett and his kids would eventually move to Wallburg, N.C., to build a life together with his new wife, Molly Martens, whom he married a month later. From the outside, life seemed to have fixed itself.

But the idyllic conclusion to the Irish widower’s love story was merely the beginning of a nightmare for him and his family. And when Corbett was found dead one August night in 2015, the questions about who was really to blame became blurred with accusations against him, his new wife, and her family.

Netflix’s new true crime documentary, A Deadly American Marriage, asks two key questions: “Who is the victim here?” and “What really happened?” 

PEOPLE is exclusively sharing the trailer from the upcoming documentary, which is set to begin streaming on May 9 and promises to shed “a bright light on the many questions that have lingered since the shocking events of that night.”

“It was one of the bloodiest crime scenes I’ve seen in a long time,” an investigator says in trailer for A Deadly American Marriage.

The new Netflix doc features interviews with Martens, her father Thomas Martens, and Corbett’s two children, who were 8 and 10 years old at the time of their father’s death, the streaming service announced in a news release.

The documentary also includes sit-down interviews with several investigators and prosecutors involved in Corbett’s 2015 murder investigation and the ensuing criminal trial. 

Produced and directed by Jessica Burgess (Rich & Shameless, American Monster) and Jenny Popplewell (What Jennifer Did, American Murder: The Family Next Door), A Deadly American Marriage promises “a rare glimpse into the conflicting perspectives of those closest to the case” – from those who blamed Corbett for the events that led to his death and those who say he never did anything to deserve his brutal killing.

Was Corbett’s death in fact a meticulously planned murder? Or did it merely stem from an act of self defense?
