NEED TO KNOW

  • The three people killed in a shooting outside a Target store in Texas have been identified
  • Two of the victims are from the same family
  • Authorities arrested Ethan Nieneker on murder charges in connection with the shooting

Three people who were killed in a shooting outside a Target store in Texas have been identified.

Adam Chow, 65, his 4-year-old granddaughter, and Hector Leopoldo Martinez Machuca, 24, were killed in the shooting in North Austin on Monday, Aug. 11, the Austin Police Department announced.

According to the press release, Martinez Machuca was an employee of the store and appeared to have been shot while collecting shopping carts in the parking lot.

Officers then located Chow, his wife, and their granddaughter, per the release, and determined that the suspect, 32-year-old Ethan Nieneker, ran up to their car as Chow sat in the driver seat — shooting at him and into the backseat, fatally striking both him and his granddaughter. Chow’s wife, who had minor injuries, carried the girl from the car before Nieneker stole the vehicle and fled.

Nieneker crashed that car before stealing another and assaulted several other drivers on the road before he was caught in South Austin. He was reportedly naked at the time, and officers had to tase him after he didn’t comply with commands.

He is now facing several murder charges, including two counts of capital murder.

Chow’s granddaughter, Astrid Fung, was not named by police, but was identified in an online fundraiser for the family, which GoFundMe confirmed to PEOPLE is “verified related to the Austin shooting.”

“Thank you to everyone who has already shown up and contributed with meals and gift cards,” the organizer wrote. “To keep helping in the most useful way, we’re shifting that support here. This fund will go toward funeral and memorial expenses and whatever else they need in the weeks ahead.”
