A 3‑year‑old boy was fatally attacked by his grandmother’s dog in New York Mills, Minn., on Sunday, Jan. 11.
The toddler, Beckett Brown, was attacked when he climbed into the outdoor enclosure for his grandmother Kristen Nelson’s American bulldog, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office, The Independent reports. Nelson was injured when she attempted to intervene and stop the attack.
Around 1 p.m., Nelson then called 911 and said that she was driving herself and Beckett to the Perham Health Emergency Room, Echo Press reports. Authorities met the pair at the E.R. and began the investigation into the incident, which remains ongoing.

Beckett died due to his injuries. Nelson was taken to a hospital in Fargo for treatment of her “significant” injuries. Her current condition has not been shared.
The dog was euthanized by the family, authorities said, The Star Tribune reports.
