2 Women Dead, 3 People Injured in Shootings Near Kentucky Airport and at Church — Police Confirm Suspect Was Killed

Two people are dead and three people were injured in Kentucky after a series of shootings near the Blue Grass Airport in Lexington.

“On July 13, 2025, around 11:36 a.m. Lexington Police officers were dispatched for a shooting involving a Kentucky State trooper on Terminal Drive” near the Blue Grass Airport, Chief Lawrence Weathers said during a press conference hours after the shootings.

The police chief explained that the trooper had pulled a vehicle over after receiving a license plate reader alert.

“The trooper was shot, and the suspect fled,” he said, adding that the trooper is in stable condition and receiving medical treatment. He also clarified that the shooting did not occur inside the Blue Grass Airport.

Lawrence said the suspect then left the scene and fled to the Richmond Road Baptist Church, where the suspect shot two women and two men.

Chief Weathers stated that both female victims — Christina Combs, 32, and Beverly Gum, 72 — were pronounced dead at the scene. One of the male victims is in critical condition, and the other is in stable condition.

Lawrence stated that Lexington Police shot and killed the suspect at the scene and that police believe the suspect may have had a personal connection to the church. The suspect’s identity will be released once his family has been notified, per the police statement.

The chief additionally said that the church is “small” and many of the congregants are friends or family, though he declined to comment on whether any of the victims were related.

In a statement shared to Facebook, the Lexington Police stated they had temporarily closed several surrounding roads during the incident “for the safety of the surrounding community.”

The Lexington Fire Department also dispatched crews to 4000 Terminal Drive after receiving reports of the initial shooting, per local news outlets WKYT and NBC affiliate LEX 18.
