Two students were shot, one fatally, at Antioch High School in suburban Tennessee on Wednesday before the alleged gunman reportedly shot and killed themselves, according to local police.
A 17-year-old male student, armed with a handgun, opened fire in the school’s cafeteria at 11:09 a.m. and hit two students, with one of them, a 16-year-old female, succumbing to her injuries at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Metro Nashville Police Department spokesperson Don Aaron told reporters on Wednesday.
MNPD identified the 16-year-old female as Josselin Corea Escalante on X.
The gunman, whom MNPD identified as Solomon Henderson, then turned his weapon on himself.
The other wounded student had his arm grazed by a bullet; he is in stable condition at Vanderbilt, authorities say. Another male student was also at Vanderbilt with an injury to his face, but it did not appear to be from a gunshot wound.
Two student resource officers (SROs) were at the school at the time of the attack, but were not near the cafeteria, said Aaron; the shooter had already shot himself by the time the SROs arrived.
Antioch, Tenn., is located roughly 17 miles southeast of Nashville’s city center. Antioch High School has roughly 2,000 students, according to the Metro Nashville Public School District’s website.
