A teenager has died after the car he was traveling in crashed into a sewage plant.
The body of the 18-year-old boy was found “a few yards away” from a Volkswagen Golf discovered “partly submerged” at the water treatment facility in Castleford, England, on Sunday, Jan. 12, West Yorkshire Police stated in a release.
A man and a woman, both aged 21, were also found inside the vehicle and were transported to the hospital for further treatment, the statement added.
They have since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
“At 6.19 a.m. (Sunday), police received a report of a vehicle with persons inside which had left Wheldon Road and gone into a ditch,” police said in the release. “Emergency services attended the location and found that the vehicle, a white Volkswagen Golf, had entered a water treatment facility and was partly submerged in a pit of water.”
The unidentified victim was confirmed to be from the town of Wakefield in West Yorkshire by police.
The water treatment facility has been identified as the Wheldale Sewage Works, according to U.K. newspapers The Telegraph and Metro.
In photos obtained by Metro from the scene, the white car could be seen partially underwater in a ditch while leaning to the side. The vehicle also showed signs of damage along one side and its roof. Emergency team members were also shown carrying a stretcher.
