  • One shell casing was recovered in the bathroom at the restaurant, police said

Philadelphia police are searching for three teenagers wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy at a Chipotle restaurant near Temple University on Monday, Jan. 12.

Police identified the victim as Khyon Smith-Tate.

Police responded to the restaurant at 1100 Montgomery Ave. at about 5:15 p.m. for a report about a person with a gun, and found Khyon suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest inside a bathroom, a police spokesperson said in a statement to PEOPLE.

Khyon was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been in the bathroom with at least one of the teens being sought when he was fatally shot, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small has said. The shooting occurred during the restaurant’s dinner rush, Small also said.

“Not only did we find one victim in the bathroom but we also found one spent shell casing,” Philadelphia Police Inspector Scott Small said during a media briefing on Monday evening near the restaurant. “So we know at least one shot was fired from a semi-automatic weapon.”

As of Thursday morning, no motive had been determined, and no arrests had been made. The investigation remains ongoing.

Police said the suspects are believed to be three individuals between the ages of 16 and 17. One suspect has dreadlocks and was wearing a black coat, a pink hooded sweatshirt, black sweatpants and black sneakers, and was carrying a red backpack at the time of the shooting. A second suspect was described as wearing a black coat, black jeans and black sneakers, and carrying a black backpack. The third suspect, who also has dreadlocks, was wearing a black coat, a blue hooded sweatshirt, black pants and black sneakers, and was carrying a dark-colored backpack.

A representative for Chipotle said in a statement that the business is cooperating with the investigation. The restaurant is temporarily closed and the chain is making a counselor available to employees.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic incident that occurred at our restaurant on the 1100 block of Montgomery Avenue in Philadelphia and we hope the individuals responsible are apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the statement said. “The safety of our employees and guests is our top priority.”
