Approximately 100,000 eggs valued at around $40,000 were stolen from a truck in Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania State Police said in an incident report that the theft was reported on Feb. 1, at 8:40 p.m.
The theft occurred at Pete & Gerry’s Organics in Greencastle, Pa. The eggs were stolen from the back of a distribution trailer. Police did not release any further information, just that the investigation is ongoing.
“Pete & Gerry’s is aware of a recent incident in Franklin County, Pa., and we are actively working with local law enforcement to investigate,” the company said in a statement to PEOPLE. “We take this matter seriously and are committed to resolving it as quickly as possible. Due to the ongoing investigation we cannot comment any further on this matter.”

The theft comes as egg production in the United States has slowed, in part because of an avian flu that has disrupted supply, the USDA said in a Jan. 31 market overview. The agency says wholesale prices of eggs have risen “sharply.”
