I don’t have a lot of details yet, but Mark asked me to post a quick note on the passing of Ed Fowler. Mark referred to him as a “Knifemaking Philosopher”, based both on their conversations as well as Ed’s extensive CV as a writer.
A former Law Enforcement Officer, Ed began making knives in the 1980s.
According to his profile on Arizona Custom Knives,
“My absolute dedication to a knife based upon function rather than fashion or glitter has resulted in knives that are immediately recognized as coming from my hands. Each is totally hand crafted by me, in my hands, as it is carefully guided in its journey to becoming an honest knife. Each knife is carefully developed step by step to be an individual statement of its own. Blades are hand forged and hand ground; when someone purchases one of my knives, he is buying a part of me, paying for my dedicated experience, skill, and what I envisioned at the time the knife was created. I take no shortcuts in the careful development of each and every knife I make”.
That is a big blockquote for me to have lifted, so sure to look at some of the amazing Fowler knives that have been sold at Arizona Custom Knives. Not kniwing the man myself, I think that quote is a great representation of the knives I have seen.
Mark will have more to add, and I will post it when he does. We will have a full obituary in the March print issue.
