Bestech and first-time collaborator Maciej Torbe have a fresh new EDC folder out now, called the Toddler. Despite the name, this knife approaches the standard EDC size class and is a modern folder for grown-ups.

Torbé, a Polish knife maker with more than a decade of experience under his belt, loves to push the boundaries of blade shapes. While there is always a sensible and time-tested profile underneath, many Torbé pieces – including other production collaborations – get a bit nutty with it when it comes to the detailing, proportions, grinds, and other elements. The result is always something striking, but with the necessary fundamentals underneath to back it up.

The Toddler’s blade is in fact one of Torbé’s tamer takes, but it still has unique swagger. It’s an even-handed mix of Wharncliffe and drop point, taking the low tip and utility edge orientation of the former, but mixing in the slicing belly of the latter. It can be opened with either the oval blade cutout, or a front flipper tab. While the front flipper has been popular for years, it really has been showing up everywhere lately as a secondary or even tertiary opening method. The blade steel on the Toddler is 14C28N.

Ergonomically, Torbé didn’t reinvent the wheel – heck, he didn’t look at the wheel at all; instead, he gave the Toddler a simple, pleasantly chunky handle that is mostly linear, with just a hint of curvature at the back end and a step in the middle of the grip area for indexing purposes. The scales are full G-10, with a liner lock underneath the off-side scale, and an non-reversible deep carry pocket clip in tow. The Toddler weighs 3.35 oz., which is in fact much lighter than the average child.
