Two of the most intriguing 2025 models Benchmade teased in January were a flipper knife, now known as the Lowden, and a slipjoint – visible only as a digital image at the time, but now on shelves with its official name, the Successor.

The Successor, like its closet relation in the Benchmade family, the Proper, takes the modern approach to slipjoint design, from construction to looks to materials. While early information indicated a blade made from MagnaCut, the final production run uses M390 instead for its 2.56-inch blade. Not as new as MagnaCut, but a reliable performer and a great choice for the daily driver-type uses the Successor seems destined for.

A sleek, arcing handle is here on the Successor, with scales made from aluminum – either blue or gold ano, in accordance with Benchmade’s modern colorway suite – capped by a bolster made from – aluminum as well. Compared to the Proper (perhaps the knife to which the 315 is the “successor”) this looks to be a bit roomier, with more hard lines to it.

In general, the closer a slipjoint knife is to a traditional knife, the less likely it is to have a pocket clip. Many aficionados like the clipless design, because it lets the linework really sing on these pieces. Though modern in construction, the Successor is, in fact, clipless – sort of. You see, there’s an included leather pocket sheath, which comes with a clip installed on it; but that clip can be removed and attached directly to the Successor if that’s more your speed. No matter which way you carry it, the Successor is a light knife – just 2.28 oz.

It is available now.
