The folks at Weatherby have been busy. The latest release, the Model 307 Alpine ST, blends lightweight performance with modularity and magnum-grade firepower. At just under two grand, this new rifle enters the lightweight backcountry market with a carbon fiber stock, spiral fluted steel, and a promise to tame even the hardest-kicking magnums.

While we haven’t put it through the wringer yet, here’s what we know so far.

A New Addition to the Model 307 Line

Specs at a Glance

  • Action: Weatherby Model 307
  • Bolt: 2-lug, M-16 style extractor, spiral fluted, tool-less disassembly
  • Stock: Peak 44 Bastion carbon fiber, vertical grip, dual sling studs
  • Trigger: TriggerTech, externally adjustable to 2.5 lbs.
  • Barrel: Spiral fluted, Cerakote finish, shortened magnum lengths
  • Brake: Accubrake ST, radial, 1/2×28 threading
  • Mounting: Compatible with Stiller/Savage mounts, 8-40 screws
  • Finish: Cerakote on all metal surfaces
  • MSRP: $1,999
  • Made in: Sheridan, Wyo.

The Alpine ST rides on Weatherby’s newer Model 307 action, a cylindrical, Remington 700-compatible platform with a two-lug bolt and M-16 style extractor. This bolt design also includes a tool-less disassembly feature, a rare perk that makes cleaning and field maintenance dead simple.

It’s engineered to accept Stiller or Savage-style scope mounts and uses beefy 8-40 screws for added durability. For those who love tinkering, the action’s compatibility with Rem 700 aftermarket parts means there’s no shortage of customization options.

Built for the Mountain Hunter

A standout feature is the Peak 44 Bastion stock, a vertical grip carbon fiber shell that weighs just 24 ounces. Designed to be both strong and ridiculously light, the stock is shaped for versatility, whether you’re shooting prone off a bipod or taking a quick offhand shot in steep country. Dual sling studs on the forend offer mounting options for slings and bipods.

Both the barrel and the bolt are spiral fluted, cutting weight while improving heat dissipation. The Alpine ST also has shorter barrel lengths across its Weatherby Magnum chamberings (except for the 6.5-300 WBY), trimming 2 inches from the standard to improve handling in tight terrain.

Trigger and Recoil Management

A TriggerTech trigger comes standard, providing an externally adjustable pull down to 2.5 pounds. It’s built with stainless steel internals, which adds a level of consistency and corrosion resistance to go with the clean, zero-creep break.

To help handle the recoil, especially with the magnum offerings, Weatherby ships the Alpine ST with its Accubrake ST muzzle brake. It’s a radial design that promises to cut felt recoil by up to 53%. All barrels are threaded 1/2×28, so you can swap the brake out if you’re running a suppressor.

Cerakote Finish and Caliber Options

Weatherby coated all metal components with Cerakote for weather resistance and added durability. That should give the rifle a fighting chance against rust when it’s packed through brutal conditions. The Model 307 Alpine ST is available in a whopping 14 chamberings:

Short Action

  • 6.5 Creedmoor
  • 22 Creedmoor
  • 25 Creedmoor
  • 6.5 PRC
  • .308 Win

Long Action

  • .257 Weatherby Magnum
  • 6.5 Weatherby RPM
  • 6.5-300 Weatherby Magnum
  • .280 Ackley Improved
  • 7mm Weatherby BC
  • .300 Win Mag
  • 7mm PRC
  • .300 PRC
  • .300 Weatherby Magnum

Weatherby builds all models in its Sheridan, Wyo., facility.

Final First Look Thoughts About the Model 307 Alpine ST

The Weatherby Model 307 Alpine ST hits all the right notes for the ounce-counting mountain hunter. Sounds like it’s light, strong, and chambered in enough heavy hitters to handle everything from Coues deer to moose.

We haven’t tested it yet, so the real-world feel, groupings, and long-term performance are still TBD.

But on paper, it checks a lot of boxes.
