KETL Mtn. Apparel, a brand known for its travel and hiking clothing, is enticing customers with a good old-fashioned treasure hunt. On Oct. 18, the company will release coordinates to hidden jars of cash and KETL gift cards stashed away throughout the Front Range of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. If you’ve ever dreamed of following clues and maps to hidden riches, now’s your chance.

Check out the details below to learn everything you need to know before you set out on your “Rocky Mountain Oyster” treasure hunt.

What Is KETL Mtn. Apparel?

Founded in 2017, KETL specializes in technical, minimalist men’s apparel for mountain biking and other outdoor activities. It makes everything from bibs to sun hoodies to travel pants. It offers free, lifetime repairs on its products.

How the Event Works

The brand will drop coordinates at ketlmtn.com/treasure at 8 a.m. MDT on Oct. 18. Unlike an ordinary treasure hunt, this one has levels.

First, people can race to find the initial 10 jars, which each hold $100 cash and a $100 gift card, as well as instructions to five level 2 jars.

Level 2 jars contain $200 cash, a $200 gift card, and coordinates to three level 3 jars. The process continues for another round until there is just one jar left, the “final boss,” which has $500 cash, a $500 gift card, and bragging rights, according to the brand. KETL will offer live updates and report findings via its Instagram.

A History of the Hunt

This is the third time that KETL has run a treasure hunt-style event. Past hunts have seen jars hidden on the top of mountains, in trees, and on lakeshores. In past versions, the brand has put jars as far out as New Zealand and Australia, and people managed to recover all but one, which was located in a remote part of Papua New Guinea.

This year, since all the jars are located on the Front Range, KETL has dubbed this hunt “The Rocky Mountain Oyster Challenge.”

“The main idea with these treasure hunts is to reward the spontaneous and adventurous among us, and really just because it’s fun, and that alone is reason enough,” Jeff Cayley, founder and CEO of KETL Mtn. Apparel, said in a press release.

“This will be a great one to see unfold, and it’ll be a damn fun time for those brave enough to pursue it. Navigating to these treasure jars will require you to run, ride, hike, climb, and drive all over the Rocky Mountains in spots nobody ever goes.”
